Girls Prep Facts

Fact 1: Girls Prep does more with less space

  • According to the DOE formula, Girls Prep is at 200% capacity in PS 188
  • Despite “overcrowding,” each student at Girls Prep gets 45 minutes of 6:1 group reading instruction every day, attends yoga or PE class every day, and attend art or music every day
  • We provide exceptional at-risk and special education services: 8% of students receive SETTS, 7% receive speech, 15% receive counseling and 16% receive tutoring

Fact 2: There is room on the Lower East Side for our Middle School

  • Each school affected by the Three DOE Proposals is at only 55-70% capacity


Fact 3: Our Middle School will serve more students on the Lower East Side

  • The Middle School will accept 50 additional students next year—all of whom will be given 100% District 1 preference
  • An additional 25 students will be accepted in the fifth grade class every year thereafter


Fact 4: Girls Prep is the only school in District 1 that has closed the achievement gap for Latina and African-American students

  • At Girls Prep, where 97% of our students are Latina or African-American, 100% passed the math exam and 96% passed the ELA Exam
  • In 2009, only 63% of Latino and African-American students in District 1 passed ELA and 82% passed the math exam


Fact 5: Girls Prep is a great neighbor

  • Girls Prep has purchased thousands of dollars worth of air conditioners and more than $30,000 worth of library books that benefit the entire PS 188 school building
  • Girls Prep Principals have biweekly meetings with shared space principals to ensure the needs of all students are being met


Fact 6: Students, Parents and Teachers stay at Girls Prep because they’re happy

  • In 2009, Girls Prep had a 97% student retention rate— On parent surveys, 100% say they feel welcome and are pleased with their daughter’s academic progress
  • In 2009, Girls Prep had a 95% staff retention rate. Of the two staff members who left, one moved to California and the other left the profession to spend more time with his family
